My tip concerns safety. I have seen several shooters call for a cold range and then not hearing anything, immediately walk out to change targets. This is a bad practice. I have coached several folks on this. We have some shooters that are hearing impaired and at least one shooter with a voice impediment. These folks may not have heard or be able to respond to your call for cold range in a timely fashion. Safety is the foremost concern at all times. The correct procedure is to call for a cold range and scan the line. Look at every shooter to insure he/she has received the request for cold range and has completed firing. Some folks may still have a round in the gun. We are not in that big of a hurry, let them finish the shot. Be aware of this and do not advance until all shooters have acknowledged and also by visual inspection that all guns are down and safe. If they do not hear you they cannot respond. If they cannot communicate loudly and clearly, there may be miscommunication. Do not assume that all are safe because you did not hear any objections. It may require that you walk down to the shooter and repeat the request. We are all out here to have fun, but we are also responsible for safety at the range. Shootem good. JC
